My writing experience has been extensive, including contract technical writing for firms such as Digital, Telstra and Technosis, which required a variety of forms including manuals (for databases, and for a complete Computer Operating System), software reports and written ‘downloads’ from various technicians.

 

Magazine Ownership

In 1985 I created and owned one of the first two international disk-based magazines in the world ('Megadisc'), and for many years wrote a variety of articles for inclusion covering straight technical, opinion pieces, and humour, as well as the production and editing of the magazine. At the same time I contributed regularly to conventional paper magazines on technical subjects.

 

IT Background

I have also constructed and maintained websites (see here for a list of websites) for others and myself, and have been using computers intensively since 1968 when I programmed mainframes as part of a mathematics degree.

 

Other Training and Experience

I have a degree in Pure Maths and Theory of Statistics, and as an educator and teacher of Mathematics and English have a great interest (and ability) in making the abstract more comprehensible.

 

I have also taught English as a Foreign Language (EFL, ESL) to adults to Cambridge Proficiency Level, and my grasp of grammar in English, Spanish and French give me strong editing and proof-reading skills.

 

Bi-lingual editing

I am particularly interested in the area of editing, in the bi-lingual area, and particularly in English/Spanish writing. There is a mountain of poor written English sitting sadly in bi-lingual publications of all kinds throughout the world, written by people who either have English as a second language or English speakers who simply have little training in written English. I can easily remedy this work, with the resultant major improvement in the quality and professionalism of the publication or website.

 

Other training

Other training includes Creative Writing at UNSW, part of a medical degree, a diploma in Acupuncture and a number of other paramedical arts and disciplines. Areas of interest and expertise include natural and alternative health, complementary medicine, Energy Psychology, computers/IT, martial arts, alternative technologies, travel (I spent some years travelling, especially in Europe and South America, where I also worked for some years) and numerous other subjects. I have wide-ranging interests.

 

I am literate, numerate, conversant in a number of scientific areas, and I keep up with the arts and sciences as much as I can.
